Ramirez, in partnership with the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Portuguese Catholic University) and the Universidade do Porto (Porto University), launched Tuna Functional, a tuna canning that favours the strengthening of the immune system.
“Tuna Functional is effective in supplying eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) fatty acids, which benefit metabolic functions such as blood pressure regulation and normal heart activity. These bioactive compounds also play a key role in promoting normal brain function and maintaining normal vision”, explained Débora Mota Teixeira, nutritionist and head of the CENUTRA, quoted in a released statement.
This food was developed in the program of study of the flavours of the future, driven by CENUTRA, and was scientifically tested with the collaboration of the Superior School of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University (ESB) and the CINTESIS, at the FMUP.
This team has proven the bioavailability (the degree to which a substance is absorbed and becomes available for use at the site of action) of omega-3 fatty acids in this canned functional tuna.
